Secrets of "The Blue Hills"
Nature and culture in the land of
swans
Nature and
culture in the heart of Sweden. All
kinds of country scenery. The
Kilsbergen hills with the swan lake
Tysslingen at their feet. Where the
wilderness meets the bygone culture
of the plains - smeltinghouse ruins
and other relics of the past.
Ramblers´trails cross the old ore
routersand the rubble-stone beaches
of ancient seas.
Up
in the hills you will find the same
kind of forest as in northern
Scandinavia. A good starting out
point is Ånnaboda, With year round
service, including fishing
information. In the forests there
are elk, beaver, lynx and other
wild-life.
Specially worth seeing are the
nature reserves Västra Trolldalen
(4) and Lövbrickan (3),
the vantage points Ullavi klint
(29)
and Rusakula (28), and the
old farm Kilsbergsstugan (1),
(see map).
The Bergslagen Trail
(Bergslagsleden) is a green artery.
Go from a ramble and enjoy the
varied scenery!
At
the foot of " the blue hills" lies
Garphyttan National Park (10),
where wild flowers bloom from early
spring to summer. There are also
meadows with orchids and other
plants in Latorp (7), in
Garphyttan (15) and relics
and remains from the ironsmelting
days, which originated hundreds of
years ago and attracted skilled
ironworkers who came here from
western Europe.
Amongst other things to see are:
Gräve medieval church (22),
Vintrosa church and village environs
(24), the "great church" at
Kil (20), södra Holmstorp
farm (19), Ramshyttan
ironworks remains (11), and
the farm estates Frösvidal (12)and
Åkerby (16)
Lake Tysslingen (9) is
Sweden´s largest swan lake. Every
year in March - April thousands of
whooper swans gather here- (in the
same way as cranes gather at
Hornborgasjön). The lake has been
restored, and more and more species
of birds are returing to nest. There
are several bird-watching towers
round round the lake. There is a
visitors´centre whith a cafe art
gallery
and information display at Rånnasta
(37), at the lake´s northern
end. In the surrounding district
there is an abundance of old farms
and churches, ranged along
picturesque country lanes.
